Is drinking 8 glasses of water a day good for you?

Good question! And the answer is….maybe.

It’s become a generic health claim that you need to drink 8 glasses of water a day because no one clarifies just how big those glasses are! Are they eight shot glasses, eight mason jars or eight big-gulp sizes that require two hands and a straw?

The truth is the average person requires about two liters or half a gallon of liquid per day. That is not strictly just water, but liquids in general.

According to the folks at Mayo Clinic you need to take several factors into consideration such a your level of heath, if you’re active (or not) and where you live.

Is 8 glasses of water really necessary? The answer depends if you’re a male or a female. Men require more liquids a day than women do and again, that exact amount will depend on numerous factors.

If you’re sick, you’ll require more fluids. If you’re active, you’ll require more fluids. If you live in a hot environment, again, you’ll require more fluids.

The bottom line is the liquids you consume each day can come from soups and cereals, juices and the fruits and vegetables you eat. What is the equivalent of 8 glasses of water? A good rule of thumb is about 20 percent of your daily liquids come from consumed foods with the balance coming from water and juice supplies.

Water is good for lubricating and cushioning joints, ridding the body of waste and keep your cool, literally. Staying hydrated has been noted as a good way to not loose your cool and keep your temperament in check.

It’s also good to know that you can drink too much water. A report from Medical News Today explains that your kidneys can eliminate as much as 28 liters of water per day, but not more than one liter per hour.

Drinking too much water can lead to water intoxication or hyponatremia, which is when your blood becomes watered down and sodium levels shift, creating an imbalance between the inside and outside of cells.

How do you know if you’re getting enough water? Look at the color if your urine. If it’s clear or light yellow, you’re good. If it’s dark yellow, consider drinking more water in a day.
