Ginkgo Biloba is one of the oldest tree species in the world. This popular supplement in its dried green leaf form, is one of the top selling herbal medicines in capsule, tablets and liquid.

People selling it claim the therapeutic properties of the plant include improved eye health and memory problems as well as treatment for blood disorders and enhancement of cardiovascular function by providing protection against oxidative cell damage from harmful free radicals.

For those of us who have normal memory function, Ginkgo Biloba will not help. If you are someone already suffering from memory issues, especially dementia, then the answer is Ginkgo Biloba could possibly help, but only with symptoms.

What Ginkgo Biloba has been shown moderately helpful for is some improvement in patients diagnosed with dementia. Doctors explain that Ginkgo Biloba does not prevent memory loss or dementia, but it can help with symptoms in that it may improve or stabilize them.

While a lot of people tout Ginkgo Biloba as a memory enhancer, the truth is there is very little research to back up those claims. While some studies have found Ginkgo Biloba to be helpful in older study patients, they also found that people who take Ginkgo Biloba have an increased risk of strokes.

What is the best vitamin for memory and focus?

Doctors do say there are some other ways you might be able to improve your memory. They include more Omega-3 fatty acid or fish oil supplements to lower your risk of Alzheimer’s. Huperzine A, which is also known as Chinese club moss, works similar to Alzheimer’s drugs.

Some studies have shown that acetyl-L-carnitine might help Alzheimer’s patients with memory problems. You could also try Vitamin E, which doesn’t decrease the risk of developing Alzheimer’s, but may slow its progress. Regardless, it’s best to consult your doctor before taking any supplements.
