Are sit ups the best way to get rid of belly fat?

How many times have you heard doing sit ups will get rid of your belly fat only to do exactly that and find the fat still there? That’s because, although there is nothing wrong with doing sit ups to improve abs, they are not the way to get rid of fat.

Doing sit ups or any other type of muscle-targeting exercises will only tone or increase your core or abdominal muscle area. There are different exercises to target different muscle groups of your abdominal area, but doing them, all or any of them, will not do much in the way of fat loss.

So what is the best way to get rid of that unwanted abdominal fat? Cardio exercise.

Any type of cardiovascular activity, combined with a fat-reduced diet, will help get rid of your current unwanted body fat.

You can choose from walking or running to playing sports like swimming, basketball or soccer, to even just jumping rope. If you’ve been sedentary for a long time, that is, you’ve not exercised in a while, it’s best to consult a medical professional before starting any exercise program.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, doing a minimum of 300 minutes per week of moderate intensity exercise or 150 minutes per week of vigorous exercises will yield results. The more physical activity you do, the more calories your body uses or burns off. Combining physical activity with a reduction in your daily calorie intake creates a calorie deficit, which in time, will result in the reduction of body fat.

Some examples of moderate activity, an activity that burns three to six times as much energy as when you’re sitting, includes brisk walking, heavy housecleaning, playing tennis or badminton or bicycling. Activities considered vigorous, an activity that burns more than six times as much energy as when you’re sitting, includes hiking, jogging, playing basketball, soccer or tennis singles.

Once you’ve reached your decrease in body fat goal, you will be able to eventually better see the results in doing targeted exercises like sit ups. Once that excess body fat is gone, the hard work from toning muscles will be more visible.
